portraits task 3

Photography gives us the ability to freeze moments, but when paired with image manipulation, it becomes a tool to reshape reality. For my third task, I challenged myself to push the boundaries of realism and visual storytelling by creating a series of manipulated photographs that combine everyday scenes with surreal and imaginative elements.

The location I chose for this series was the Orange Line Metro Train Station, a place filled with structure, symmetry, and movement — the perfect setting to experiment with visual illusions and digital creativity.

Concept and Execution

Using Adobe Photoshop, I crafted a three-part photo series, each image telling a different story and showcasing different techniques of manipulation. Here's a breakdown of each image:

1. The Clone

In the first photo, I captured a wide shot at the metro platform and added a clone of the same person multiple times in the frame. The idea was to create the illusion of a crowd made up of just one individual — a reflection on routine, monotony, and the repetition of urban life. Using layer masking and careful blending in Photoshop, I made it look like the same person was standing in different spots simultaneously, interacting with the environment in various ways.

2. Painted Walls

The second image was taken at a stairway that leads down from the metro station. To add a twist of creativity, I digitally added vibrant paintings on the wall, giving the dull, industrial space an artistic and colorful personality. These “murals” were designed to make the scene feel like an open-air gallery, blurring the line between public transport and public art. The manipulation added depth, vibrance, and a sense of wonder to an otherwise ordinary place.

3. Galaxy Above

The final image in the series was where I went completely surreal — I removed the roof of the metro station and replaced the sky with a galaxy scene. Stars, swirling colors, and falling asteroids transformed the station into a scene from a sci-fi dream. This manipulation was a creative leap, turning an everyday setting into a cosmic portal. It symbolized escapism — the idea that imagination can take us far beyond the places we stand in.

Editing

Final Thoughts

This task allowed me to experiment with storytelling through digital manipulation, blending photography with creativity to form visuals that feel both familiar and fantastical. Each image required attention to detail, planning, and hours of editing in Photoshop — but the result was worth it.

This series taught me that photography doesn’t have to end at the click of a shutter — sometimes, it’s just the beginning of something much more imaginative.
