Experimental Film – Glitch in Reality
Directed by: Abdullah
Genre: Experimental
Duration: 3 minutes
Language: No dialogue
1. SYNOPSIS
A masked character drifts through a surreal world where reality begins to fall apart. Reflections
disobey physics, time moves in reverse, and the character's connection to the real world fades. As
visual glitches intensify, the line between the conscious self and subconscious blurs — until the
character vanishes, leaving only the mask behind.
2. CONCEPT & THEMES
This film explores the fragility of perception and reality. It symbolizes psychological breakdown,
digital overstimulation, and the search for identity through visual storytelling. There is no dialogue;
instead, the film uses glitch effects, match cuts, and symbolic visuals to portray the breakdown of
reality.
Symbolic Elements:
– The Mask: Hides identity, represents detachment from self
– The Mirror: Self-perception and alternate realities
– The Clock: Fragile concept of time, reversibility
– The Smoke: Inner chaos and fading presence
– The Shadow/Soul: Duality of self and subconscious
– Glitches and Blur: Visual representation of instability and confusion
3. ARTIST STATEMENT
Glitch in Reality is a personal exploration of distorted consciousness and disconnection from reality.
It reflects how digital dependence and psychological stress fracture one’s sense of identity. With no spoken words, the film communicates entirely through visual language — abstract, haunting, and
emotionally resonant.
4. TREATMENT / SCENE BREAKDOWN
00:00 – 00:10
The character (unmasked) sleeps. A mask fades in as an overlay. He opens his eyes.
00:10 – 00:14
Handheld window shot to show a sense of external chaos.
00:14 – 00:26
On a train platform. A screen shows a train moving. The character stands still — out of sync
00:26 – 00:31
Each letter of “REALITY” flashes briefly on a keyboard — glitch effect and match cuts.
00:31 – 00:47
The masked face glitches using tripod-mounted slow shutter blur.
00:47 – 01:13
Mirror scene: the reflection moves independently from the character.
01:13 – 01:31
Walking in slow shutter motion. POV alternates with long shot, representing his altered perception.
01:31 – 01:56
He opens a cupboard. A small clock hangs inside. He disappears. The clock begins to tick in reverse
01:56 – 02:05
His shadow walks through him and continues forward — symbolizing dissociation.
02:05 – 02:17
Smoke leaks from the mask as the character stands still.
02:17 – 02:26
He stares outside the window. Glitches. He falls.
02:26 – 02:52
The character reads a book upside down, glitches again, then disappears. The mask is left hanging by the window.
